The contents of a pellet collected from a Brown Shrike Lanius cristatus on Fair Isle on 13th October 2019 (Tyler 2020) were analysed. The analysis showed that the identifiable remains were largely hard fragments of beetle exoskeletons (table 1), in particular weevils. All taxa detected in the analysis are known to occur on Fair Isle. However, the detection of so many Vine Weevils Otiorhynchus sulcatus is noteworthy as this species was first recorded on the island as recently as 2008, although it is now frequently encountered in and around gardens. Barynotus squamosus, of which one individual was detected in the pellet, is a large weevil, common on the island though listed as Nationally Scarce (Hyman & Parsons 1992).
