Quantifying the contribution of the ‘helper’ in cooperatively nesting Common Buzzards

Abstract

Observations at a Common Buzzard Buteo buteo nest in Cornwall in 2015 helped to quantify the benefit of having a ‘helper’. The helper provisioned the chick with as many prey items as the male and female combined, although these were generally smaller, making its overall contribution comparable in terms of prey mass. These results suggest that breeding pairs with a helper can gain an advantage in prey provisioning during chick rearing.
